WILCO
WILCO
Wilco (The Album) - $14.99 CD / $23.99 2xLP+CD
Wilco's seventh album combines the intimacy of its previous studio disc, Sky Blue Sky, with the experimentation of A Ghost Is Born in a set that boasts strong melodies and gorgeous, often unabashedly pop arrangements.
ANNA & CHRIS'S PICK OF THE WEEK!

ha ha tonkaHA HA TONKA Novel Sounds Of The Nouveau - $12.99 CD / $18.99 LP
From the junebug-like humming guitars that open the record on "Pendergast Machine," to the tent-revival spiritual a capellas complementing several tracks, this record is a product of whence it came. From religion ("The Holy Ghost, Brother. It's a weapon. I'm walking on the Devil's backbone" on the eponymously named "Walking on the Devil's Backbone,") to retribution ("We know that history will be the harshest judge and we are all condemned," on "What Shepherds of These Hills"), Ha Ha Tonka tackle bleak material with a sense of lightness and perseverance, and a lyrical sensibility that's sharp as a tack.

BJORKBJORK Voltaic - $11.99 CD / $17.99 CD+DVD / $42.99 2xCD+2xDVD
Voltaic is a remarkable, multi-media document of what happened after Volta was completed -- a journey of a different sort as the ever-evolving singer assembled her live band, made a collection of typically amazing videos and one-step-ahead remixes, and toured the world. She recorded the Voltaic live CD in one take at Olympic Studio in London. It's a stunning performance, featuring cutting-edge computer technology, an old-school horn section and a female, flag-toting Icelandic choir. Deluxe version includes the Voltiac live CD plus a DVD featuring 21 songs performed on the Volta tour. Super deluxe 2xCD+2xDVD version features live recordings, remixes, videos and much more.

LORD MANDRAKELORD MANDRAKE - LOCAL NIGHT
Monday, July 6 @ 7pm. Free, all-ages.
On July 7th, the Salt Lake City based band Lord Mandrake will be releasing their debut album "The Best of All Possible Worlds" in the Salt Lake area. A limited quantity of 100 screen printed albums were manufactured, and will be available from Slowtrain. "The Best of All Possible Worlds" explores many of the themes Lord Mandrake established on their 2007 EP, "Dreamer".  The album revolves around doubt in the presence of hardship and pain, and how conflict forces an individual to unwillingly (for better or worse) reevaluate their system of beliefs. Like nearly all pieces art, "The Best of All Possible Worlds" is a portrait of an individual struggling to make sense of their beliefs and experiences.

Hi My Name Is Ryan

HI MY NAME IS RYAN IN-STORE
Monday, July 20 @ 7pm. Free, all-ages.
With special guest Pillowfort.
Faced with his own unique adolescent struggles, Ryan Avery takes happiness into his own hands, determined to make his life awesome. He discovers the therapeutic value of entertaining others and throws himself into cornucopia of creative projects. From thrash and "noise" bands, to an a cappella duo, to a "children's" talk show, Ryan's performances steadily push the boundaries of creativity, decency, absurdity, and safety. His madcap antics force those in his path to consider the universal question: "What is art?"

Digital highlight

he latest The Builders and The Butchers record, Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well, has been selling like hotcakes here at the shop. But let us school you on a lil' 12" split LP that was released with another incredible Portland band that you'll want to keep your eyes on, Loch Lomond.

Loch Lomond and the Builders and the Butchers might seem an odd couple. The former plays idyllic, expansive chamber folk, the latter stripped-down punk-blues. But these seemingly disparate groups share two commonalities: Both have dark sides, and both could be from alternate universes. The Builders and the Butchers play rock 'n' roll as invented during the Great Depression; and while it's hard to pin down where Loch Lomond's world diverged from ours, its music seems like it's based on a history the rest of us didn't experience. And the bands' untitled split LP is a great demonstration of their shared otherworldliness.
