"We were on the road for two months and travelled to 16 cities and 10 countries. Through Interrail you get the chance to create your own individual route."
What is Interrail?
33 countries, 1 rail Pass
The Interrail Pass is a single train ticket that lets you travel by train in and between up to 33 countries in Europe.
With the Pass, you can use the network of over 35 European railway and ferry companies, such as Deutsche Bahn, SNCF, Trenitalia and Eurostar. Many trains can be boarded just by showing staff your Interrail Pass on your phone with the Rail Planner app.
Seat reservations
However, if you travel at busy times, on popular routes, or on certain trains (high-speed trains and night trains), then you will need a seat reservation for an extra fee to secure your plans.
How does it work?
Interrail isn't a tour operator. We give you the travel tools to create your own rail trip through Europe!
1. Plan your route using the Interrail train timetable or Rail Planner app.
2. Find the ideal Pass for your route. This depends on how many stops you will make and how long you will be away.
3. Reserve your seats to secure your plans. You can check your route on the timetable or Rail Planner app to see if reservations are needed.
4. Activate your Pass on the Rail Planner app and jump aboard your first travel day!

What Interrailers say
What is a travel day?
Learn our language with some key terms explained below:
- Travel day
-
A travel day is a 24-hour period in which you can travel on trains (or ferries) with your Interrail Pass. It lasts from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59 on the same calendar day. On each travel day, you have access to the train networks where your Interrail Pass is valid.
Night trains
Taking a night train only uses 1 travel day - the day on which you depart.
- Pass validity
-
Interrail Passes are usually valid for a 1 month period. However, certain Passes are valid for longer, usually 2 or 3 months.
- Flexi vs. continuous
-
Flexi Passes - these are valid only on a number of travel days within 1 or 2 months. You can choose to use up your travel days whenever you want during that time period.
Continuous Passes - these are valid for an entire period of time - 15 days, 22 days, 1 month, 2 months or 3 months. It's possible to use your Pass for travel on every day during that time period.
- Outbound/inbound travel days
-
Travelling with Interrail within your country of residence is limited to one outbound travel day (to leave) and one inbound travel day (to return). These travel days can occur at any time during your trip.
- Seat reservations
-
If you travel at busy times, on popular routes, or on certain trains (high-speed trains and night trains), then you are likely to need a seat reservation for an extra fee (in addition to your Interrail Pass). Check your route on the Interrail timetable to see if a reservation is mandatory or recommended. Then book your reservation here, or with the national train carrier.
