This is a list of reservation fees for European night trains. Reservations for night trains are always compulsory. The reservation fee depends upon the type of seat or sleeping accommodation. You can reserve your night trains through our Reservation Service.

EuroNight trains

A large network of night trains in Europe operate under the name EuroNight (EN). These night trains are jointly operated by many different operators, especially in Central Europe. Because of this, they often contain a variety of different carriages depending on the route. They are also mostly split up at some point during the night, because one train can have carriages bound for multiple destinations.

Other international night trains

Apart from the ÖBB Nightjet and EuroNight trains, there are other night trains that operate across Europe. These trains are also usually a cooperation between multiple operators. There is not necessarily a difference in comfort or appearance between EuroNight trains and the following night trains.

Snälltåget Night train (Germany, Denmark, Sweden)

The Swedish private operator Snälltåget has one international night train at the moment, offering a direct connection from Stockholm to Berlin.

Regiojet night train (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland)

Based in Brno, Regiojet runs some popular night trains to both Poland and Slovakia, serving some important destinations in all three countries.

Another operator in Czech Republic, Leo Express, runs a seat-only train towards Slovakia through the night.

Domestic night trains per country

Austria

ÖBB Nightjet also sells tickets for domestic connections because the country is large enough to need an overnight travel on the train. One separate domestic service runs from Vienna to Bregenz.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria has a number of domestic night trains, all running from Sofia towards the east. The trains to the Black Sea coastal cities Varna and Burgas are especially popular during summer.

Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Pleven, Ruse, Silistra and more.

Croatia

Croatia has a couple of night train services running to and from Split. During summer season, these services run from cities such as Osijek, Vukovar and Vinkovci via Zagreb to the Adriatic coast. The rest of the year, a weekly service runs from Zagreb to Split.

Finland

The Santa Claus Express runs all year long to connect the south of Finland to the northernmost regions. These trains are particularly popular around Christmas and the rest of the winter.

 

Santa Claus Express destinations:

Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Oulu, Rovaniemi, Tornio, Kolari, Kemijärvi and more.

 

Reservation fees:

Night train reservations at VR cost 50% of a full fare ticket.

All prices are subject to availability and vary on the route you are booking:

  • Seat: €5 – €32,70
  • Double sleeper cabin: €39 – €150
  • Deluxe double sleeper cabin with private bathroom: €39 – €160

It is recommended to book early, especially when you want to travel during winter-high season. This way, you will save on reservation costs.


A €1 fee applies when making your reservation at a Finnish railway station. During high season the price of reservations increase by 20%.

France

The night train network in France is called Intercités de Nuit. Trains run from Paris to the Pyrenees, the Languedoc, the Alps and the Cote d’Azur.

Germany

Germany does not have its own domestic night train network, but on certain routes, regular IC and ICE trains run throughout the night. This overnight network covers most main cities. The trains only have 2nd and 1st class seats.

 

It is also possible to book night train accommodation on the ÖBB Nightjet services, for instance, from Cologne or Hamburg to Munich. For more information, take a look at the ÖBB Nightjet section above.

Great Britain

Two domestic night trains operate in Great Britain: the Caledonian Sleeper and the Night Riviera Sleeper. Both trains have high-quality services and are amongst the best night trains in Europe in terms of comfort.

 

Caledonian Sleeper destinations:

London Euston, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William and more.

 

Night Riviera Sleeper destinations:

London Paddington, Plymouth, Penzance and more.

Italy

Domestic night trains in Italy are called InterCity Notte. It is one of the largest night train networks in Europe with trains running all the way from the North to Sicily, Calabria and Apulia.

Norway

Three night train operators are active in Norway: VY Tog, GoAhead Nordic and SJ Norge. They each go to different destinations.

Poland

PKP Intercity operates a significant network of Polish night trains, crossing the country from north to south and from east to west. Seasonal trains run to the Baltic Coast or to the mountains in the south.

Romania

An extensive network of domestic night trains operates in Romania. Most trains start or end in the capital city of Bucharest and reach far corners of the country. Seasonal night trains run to the Black Sea coast from all parts of the country as well.

A few night train routes also exist in Slovakia on the railway lines running west to east. They mainly connect Bratislava and Kosice, with branches to Humenné and Nove Zamky.

Turkey

The Turkish operator TCDD has one of the most comfortable sleeper trains in Europe. Some of their trains operate on several lines on a daily basis and others, a couple of times a week. You can reach the Mediterranean coast in the west and the far east of Turkey by night train.

Swedish night trains can be booked online at www.SJ.se.


Book reservations for German night trains at the Deutsche Bahn website. Follow the instructions below:

  • Enter train details.

  • Click on ‘Purchase’ or ‘Check availability’ (ignore the prices) for the train of your choice.

  • At the bottom of the page click on ‘Book only extra charge’.

  • On the next page select ‘Pass offer (Interrail)’.

  • You can then choose the type of seat or sleeping accommodation you would like. Prices are shown for the different options.

  • You can choose online tickets, which you can print (it is possible to have tickets posted but there is an additional charge).
